My Story
I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (recategorised under ASD umbrella in the DSM-5) at the age of 8.
Severe impairment with social cues & norms, communication, body language and socialising meant I spent a great deal of my childhood lonely, isolated and feeling misunderstood by others. Autism in it's many forms can be an isolating and lonely experience for many which often has negative knock-on effects to social & mental health, life fulfilment and prospects.
I was fortunate enough to have a supportive family during my developmental years - equality vital was the provision of support from The National Autistic Society.
Life with conditions under the ASD umbrella isn't easy but with the right support Autistic life has as many pro's as it does con's and I'm forever grateful that The National Autistic Society helped me overcome the difficulties I continue to face; and importantly to value the ways Autism makes me different and the strengths and skills it has given to me.
With the help of The National Autistic Society I built the skills, techniques and strategies to socialise, communicate and integrate successfully. This has been vital in allowing me to pursue a fulfilling, successful life - but most of all one that isn't quite as isolated or lonely.
I've experienced first-hand how life changing the work The National Autistic Society does can be and feel that every autistic person deserves the same support and opportunities that I was fortunate enough to receive.
As a professional strongman (England's 2nd Strongest Man 2023) running a half-marathon is quite a daunting challenge! As of writing this I've purchased my running shoes but haven't yet ran even a mile!
Please consider sharing this fundraiser to build awareness or donating if possible. Any and all support is deeply and truly appreciated! Thankyou for taking the time to read this.
