My Story

Ever since my wife Lena was diagnosed with dementia in 2013, running has helped to give me the physical and mental strength I've needed as her caregiver. But as Lena neared the end of her long journey, I had amazing professional guidance and emotional support from the team at St Ann's Hospice too. In the early visits, they helped me and our children to understand what our options were and what arrangements we should make. Then they contacted me weekly to make sure that all was well, co-ordinating medications and consultancy visits, ensuring that Lena was able to stay where she wanted to be, at home with those who loved her, till the end.

Competing in the A J Bell Great Manchester Run will be my first competitive 10K for 8 years. As I train and race, I’ll be raising money for St Ann’s Hospice — my way of thanking them for the stellar care they have provided to our family. And by contributing to my fundraising effort, you will help to secure the future of this vital charity, which is only partially funded by the NHS and depends on donations for 70% of its income.

Shortly after I made this fundraising decision, Lena finally left us — on February 8th. Friends have asked how they can donate in her memory. I can think of no better cause than this one — helping others through the most difficult days of their lives ... and I know Lena would have agreed.

Thank you.
